When working in the field, we are often asked questions about ourselves, the drone, and permissions. Read on to find the answers to our frequently asked questions.
Using a drone commercially requires permission to fly from the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority). Various courses are available whereby you are trained and assessed on your competence. There are examinations which take place to test your knowledge of aviation law, planning risk assessments and your ability to fly.
Here at WeDrone, we have completed two courses recognised by the CAA for flying drones. We used Commercial Drone Training Ltd to complete our courses and keep our qualifications up to date.
Our drones are marked with the appropriate pilot ID. We also have a license that enables us to fly larger drones when required to do so, with certificates for GVC and A2 CofC. The larger drones come with more restrictions than our standard smaller drones.
Are there any rules or guidelines for flying drones in the UK?
The CAA sets up a code of conduct.
You should always have insurance to fly commercially. Here at WeDrone, we are insured for public liability up to five million pounds.
Yes, you will always need to check permissions before you fly your drone. We constantly check with the landowner or business before we fly. It’s best practice to check the area before the flight to ensure you are allowed to work there. Special permissions may be necessary before conducting a flight.
It is always best to check the weather conditions before you fly your drone. Flying in heavy winds, rain, or snow can affect the performance. There is a risk of damaging either the equipment or someone’s property and taking lower-quality images and videos. At WeDrone, we always check the weather forecast first and wait for a break in the weather to continue with the planned work.
Drones have varying flight times. Our standard flight time is 40 minutes; however, we always carry spare battery packs to ensure the project is completed.
All videos and images are shot in 4k HDR, and images are shot with a 48-megapixel camera. This provides clarity and allows a clear zoom if required. We offer true vertical shooting to create stunning portrait shots and videos, perfect for your reels and social media content.
All material is edited in-house as per the initial brief.
Drone inspections and surveys can offer cost-effective solutions for filming hard-to-reach and dangerous areas at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
Drone surveys depend on many factors such as the drone to be used, a distance of travel to the site, the work scope and the weather.
At WeDrone, a standard rooftop survey on an average-sized home within one hour from the office would start from £200 + VAT. The cost can rise depending on the location of the base point. The raw footage can be supplied via a link to the client within 24 hours of the date of filming. If editing is required, this will take a little longer. The expectations will be discussed at the initial meeting/call.
Commercial inspections are appraised in advance. The cost will depend on the location’s distance, the complexity of the project, and the time on site. All costs will be discussed up front at the initial fact-find.
Once we receive your initial enquiry, we will discuss your requirements. If a site appraisal is required, this will be arranged, and costs will be discussed. A fact-find will be conducted.
A proposal will be put together, including the flight plan, required permissions, storyboard, and risk assessment. We will also take the weather into account when planning the filming day.
The end result will be discussed and agreed upon by both parties. Part of the discussion will include how the files are received. Some clients like to have the raw footage, while others like to have edited videos. Either way, WeDrone can ensure you have what you need for your project.
